Finally, 2020 Topps Series 1

It took almost a week, but my Target finally had stocked 2020 Topps Series 1. I grabbed a blaster box, hanger box, and three retail packs. Here is what I got.

I’ll start by giving my opinion about the design like everyone else does; “meh”. It’s not bad, but not great. The photography seems really nice. Topps picked out some good photos.

I’ll start with the Target Exclusive Vladimir Guerrero Jr. inserts. This is an actual insert set dedicated to Vladimir Guerrero Jr’s 2019 season.

I was lucky enough to pull a gold version numbered to 50.

Topps decided to create an insert set for the decades of past and into the future. Another massive insert set.

As you probably know by now, Topps chose 35 years to be the anniversary set. Why 35? Why not 40? 25? Anyways, I like these 1985 Anniversary inserts. I just wish it was a smaller set.

This Topps Choice set feels like it should come out of Archives.

Turkey Reds! I pulled 14 Turkey Red inserts. These are nice and printed on the “vintage” card stock. The regulars are nicer than the chrome version I pulled. The design just doesn’t transfer to chrome very well.

Finally, the money card. Instead of a “relic”, Topps created a thick rookie reprint with a medallion pin. I like it! I just wish it was a Twin.

I won’t be keeping any of the inserts, except Minnesota Twins. The insert sets are just too big for me to chase with the base set.

Sounds like the Turkey Red inserts are pretty popular this year. I like the look of them, except for the Chrome versions.

This year’s base card design is pretty cool to me but positioning could be improved. Those Decades Best insert cards are awesome (except for #DB-24–the Dodgers do not wear RED numbers on their backs).
