2016 Panini Select Football

2016 Select Football Break

Panini’s 2016 Select Football was released this past week. This is the return of the Select line that was skipped in 2015. Select Football falls right between Prizm Football and Spectra Football.

I only got into one break of Select Football this year (so far). Even though it is one of my favorite 2014 products, I am just not chasing that much in football right now.

Before I start showing the cards, I would like to thank Chris at Top Shelf Breaks. He surprised me with a box when he was dropping his computer off at my house for some long overdue maintenance.

Starting with the base

The base cards for the set still look similar to the 2014 Select; Metallic background with a gold-ish frame. There are multiple tiers in the set, but I haven’t taken the time to look into that yet. These cards look much better in person, the scans do not do them justice.

All things shiny

I am a sucker for shiny cards. Don’t ask me why– I just am. 2014 Select Football was loaded with colorful shiny parallels and apparently so it this product! Again, these cards look much better in person.

Two autographs and a patch

Each box states you will receive two autographed cards and one jersey card. All three of the hits were on thick card stock. These three cards felt and looked like something you would pull out of Spectra. Very nice.

But wait, there’s more!

This year Panini did something a little different. A draft redemption. Yes, a draft redemption. Each box will contain a redemption a card for the player drafted at a specific position. I managed to pull WR1, which means I get a rookie card of the first wide receiver drafted in the 2017 NFL Draft. Not bad.

Again, I would like to thank Chris from Top Shelf Breaks for the box. Go check them out!

  1. I don’t follow football all that much anymore, but in my mind, that was a pretty darn good box. The Tie-Dye Joe Namath is fantastic! And I really like the draft redemption idea.

    1. Jon,

It was a great box. It definitely could have been worse. I like the draft redemption too. I really like interactive redemptions– adds a little something to collecting.

      Thanks for reading.

  2. Looks like a great break! I dont know much about football but I’d say you did well with the rookies, and the WR redemption. Not sure how they can get away with calling this “2016” but I’m nit-picking. Panini makes some quality cards. Too bad they don’t have a license to make make baseball or hockey (anymore) cause that’s 80-90% of my collection.

    1. Thanks, Chris. I have been less and less into football this year. I plan on doing a lot more baseball from now on. I just enjoy collecting it more. As for the box, I actually hit some of the best rookie base cards I could get out of the set. The Ezekiel Elliot and Dak Prescott RCs are selling for a lot right now.

I also like most Panini products and I really wish the licenses were shared among companies. Their current baseball products can’t have team logos and it is hard for me to really get into them.

      Thanks for reading.

  3. Select is a sweet product. I like that it’s released this time of year and it really feels like a higher end product than it is. Haven’t bought a box yet but have gotten some packs from My LCS. Nice product!

    1. Select is good stuff. The 2014 Select Football release is good stuff and the price is really good for what you get. I think it was as low as high $30 a box at one point.

I expect (hope) the 2016 products to drop in price when the 2017 rookies/products start releasing in the next few months.
